Have you seen the new Bento Bite lunchboxes in Woolworths yet? We were lucky enough to get to road test the kids’ dining pack thanks to the lovely team at Smash.

One of the biggest surprises about travelling full time, and parenting in general, is how much food is needed!
Don’t get me wrong – I love to eat – but the snacking power of two preschoolers is off the charts. Half of our bus is taken up with food storage, and a lot of our days on the road are spent figuring out where, when and what to eat.

When we are sightseeing we always make sure we take lots of food along with us, it not only saves us money but also makes sure we can control the healthiness of snacks and lunch. We are also raising our children vegan, and although it is quickly becoming more accepted and widespread, quite often hot chips will be the only thing we’ll find on a menu that we can eat. (not that I’d ever complain about having to eat hot chips of course!)

We normally throw a variety of foods into random plastic boxes, in a bag along with fruit and crisps, and grab things as we go. It’s not very organised. It also means we’ll have at least one argument about who ate all the strawberries, or why someone got more rice crackers than everyone else. This is why when we got the opportunity from Smash to review their new Bento Bites lunch box range we jumped at the chance.

I’m already a big fan of Smash, an Australian grown brand that’s now gone worldwide. Their products are always super durable and I love the message they are constantly reinforcing of less waste, more sustainability. They are committed to reducing environmental impact and care about the planet too – 100% aligning with our values. The Bento Bite lunch box is designed specifically with waste-free lunches in mind, with lots of different compartments to hold a variety of healthy foods, that aren’t in single-use disposable plastic or foil packaging.
I drink a LOT of tea and have been using their on-the-go cup for over 18 months now, with no signs of wear and tear. Durability is a huge part of our decision making when buying for the boys – they do love to destroy things!
The Bento Bite lunch box has a durable outer case to protect from drops and bumps and it’s also leak proof.
We’ve been using the lunchboxes for a couple of weeks now, and they are perfect for taking to the park, picnics and surprisingly also for food on the road – the boxes are perfect for sitting on their knees with snacks in while we are driving.

I love the little pots that are perfect for coconut yoghurt and dips – the only complaint I have is that there is nowhere inside the lunchbox to store a spoon. The lunch boxes come with an ice brick to freeze in Summer (we’re still in Tasmania in Spring so definitely don’t need this feature yet!) and it handily fits underneath the removable food tray to keep everything fresh. We got one plain blue and one dinosaur design box – luckily the boys quickly sorted out ownership with no fighting (it’s a miracle!) – and they also received matching drink bottles, bamboo dinosaur bowls, plates and curly straw cups. We travel with our blender and the curly straw cups are brilliant for our daily smoothie habit – the lids screw on tight, meaning we can also use them while driving without the fear of smoothie in seat spillage!

The cute yet grumpy looking dinosaurs were a massive hit with the boys (cute but grumpy – kind of sounds just like them!), and with the eco-conscious design and durability features, they were a hit for us parents too.
